Abstract | Two apparently widely held beliefs among college administrators may be harmful to higher education. The first is that faculty collective bargaining is somehow unprofessional and automatically harmful to educational purposes. The second is that bargaining erodes the authority of administrators and trustees, thereby preventing them from accomplishing their work with some degree of efficiency and leadership. Bargaining encourages strong executive leadership and the standardization of institutional procedures. Bargaining does not, per se, reduce the employer's right to make unilateral decisions about subjects not directly impacting conditions of faculty employment. On the other hand, faculty members have rights that should be vigorously upheld, with or without bargaining. (Author/MSE) |
